Angelo Gaja is a prominent figure in the wine world, often referred to as the King of Barbaresco. He played a significant role in the development of Piedmontese wines based on the Nebbiolo grape and is known for limiting harvests to achieve exceptional quality. The Gaja family, led by daughters Gaia and Rossana, continue to run the company.
The wine offers aromas of mint, roses, red berries and menthol. The flavour profile includes dried cherries, pomegranate, licorice, espresso and tobacco, supported by dense tannins and a fresh acidity.
In 1988, Gaja acquired the Sperss vineyard near Serralunga, which gave them control over Barolo production. The Sperss wine presents an intense, dark red color and requires good oxygenation to reveal its complex aromas of dark berries and white truffles. The taste is deep and powerful with spicy and vegetal undertones.
