Basconcillos – Organic high-altitude Ribera del Duero

Bodegas Basconcillos is a modern, organic winery in the northern Ribera del Duero. Located at 1000 meters altitude in the Burgos province, the house combines classic Spanish structure with freshness, minerality and balance. The focus is on clean, precise expressions of Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) from calcareous soils and a continental climate.

Philosophy and vinification

Basconcillos works exclusively organically and with minimal intervention in the cellar. The grapes are hand-harvested and selected, and the wines ferment spontaneously in steel or concrete. Aging takes place in French and American oak barrels depending on the style of the cuvée. The goal is a balance between terroir, acidity, ripeness and complexity – not pronounced extraction or overripe fruit.

The location and terroir of the fields

  • Altitude: 950–1050 m above sea level provides low night temperatures and long maturation – an important factor for acidity and aroma preservation.
  • Soil: Calcareous clay and sand with good drainage. Contributes to mineral and linear wines.
  • Climate: Continental – warm days and cold nights. Large diurnal difference creates complexity.

The wines from Basconcillos differ from many heavier Ribera wines in their structure, freshness and precision – without losing depth or concentration.

Selected wines from Basconcillos

  • Basconcillos Roble: Tempranillo aged briefly in oak. Fresh red fruit, spice and balance.
  • Basconcillos Crianza: 12–14 months in oak. Dark fruit, licorice, ripe structure and long finish.
  • Basconcillos Viñas Viejas: Old vines, longer barrel aging. Complex and age-worthy.
