Origin and manufacturer
The wine comes from the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the southern Rhône region of France. The producer is Château Maucoil, which has been certified organic since 2011.
The fields are located in the northwestern part of the appellation, with soil types such as sand, rock and pebbles – which produces a wine with both concentration and finesse.
Grape composition and technical profile
Grape varieties: Primarily Grenache (approx. 60%) , supplemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault .
Alcohol percentage: Approximately 15% vol. for the 2020 vintage.
Vinification: The grapes are hand-harvested and are certified organically grown. Vinification takes place in concrete tanks with traditional fermentation; then aging (separately per variety/plot) in both tanks and old oak barrels. The yield is low (~25 hl/ha for some plots).
Smell and taste
Color: Intense ruby red with a slight violet hue.
Aroma: Notes of ripe dark berries such as blackberries and cherries, combined with spices, garrigue (Mediterranean herbs) and a touch of dark chocolate and coffee.
Taste: The wine is full-bodied and concentrated, but still carries a touch of elegance and structure – ripe fruit meets clear acidity and well-balanced tannins. There are notes of dried fruit, pepper, minerality and a long, harmonious finish.
Food matching and serving
Serving temperature: Approximately 16–18 °C – preferably decanted to open up the aromas.
Food match: Suitable for hearty dishes such as grilled lamb, game, braised beef, mushroom dishes or mature cheeses. The great structure and heat make it an obvious companion for robust cooking.
Overall impression
Château Maucoil 2020 is a compelling wine from the Rhône, where both terroir and organic cultivation work together. It delivers great intensity, ripe fruit and a distinctive structure – but without losing finesse. If you are looking for a powerful yet elegant classic from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this wine is an excellent choice.
