Malecon rum is known for its Cuban style, but it actually originates from Panama. This rum is made in collaboration with Varela Hermanos Bodegas de America SA. Malecon offers a wide range of rums, all based on molasses, with different levels and variations. Varela Hermanos is based in Pesé, a town in south-central Panama. In 1908, Don José Varela Blanco founded the first sugar factory in the area, and in 1936, rum production began, resulting in high-quality rums ever since. Malecon is known for being slightly drier than Malteco, but with greater complexity. Their range is divided into three main categories: 'Rum-Reservas', 'Rum Rare Proof' and 'Rum Seleccion Esplendida'. The Reserva series consists of rums that have been aged between 10 and 25 years. Rare Proof rums are bottled at cask strength, which varies depending on the length of time they have been aged and the strength of the cask. This range includes 13-year, 17-year and 20-year rums, as well as a range of vintage Rare Proof rums, introduced in 2021 with the 2014 vintage. Seleccion Esplendida consists of vintage rums from specially selected vintages, carefully selected by Marco Savio, and offers unique taste experiences. In addition, Malecon also produces the sweeter Licor de Ron with an alcohol content of 35%, which is very popular due to its rich complexity and sweetness.
