Kanonkop Estate Pinotage 2018

Kanonkop Estate is known for creating some of the finest Pinotage wines in South Africa. The vines, which are up to 50 years old, are grown without irrigation, resulting in a low yield of 37 hectolitres per hectare. The wine undergoes fermentation in open vats for 4-5 days and is then aged for 16-18 months in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new.

The wine is both concentrated and complex, with a harmonious flavor that makes it ideal for spicy dishes, especially those from Asian cuisine.

Stellenbosch, located about 45 km northeast of Cape Town, is recognized as South Africa's leading wine region. The area's unique soil and climate, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, give the grapes an extra dimension of aroma and freshness.

Kanonkop Estate, located near Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, has a rich history. The property was originally purchased by JW Sauer and later run by his son Paul Sauer together with Jan "Boland" Coetzee. The first wines were bottled in 1973 and today the fourth generation of the family runs the estate. The vineyards extend over 100 hectares with 50% Pinotage, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.5% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc.

Since 2002, winemaker Abrie Beeslar has been responsible for wine production and has raised the quality by using long skin contact and frequent stirring before fermentation.
