Origin and manufacturer

The wine comes from the classic Château Rauzan-Gassies, which is classified as 2nde Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. The winery is located in the Margaux area, Médoc, and owns around 28 hectares of vineyards with vines planted on gravel and sandy gravel soil – typical of Margaux.

Grape composition and technical details

Year: 2015.

Grape composition (approximately): 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot.

Alcohol content: approximately 14% vol.

Vinification: The grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation and malolactic fermentation are carried out. Oak barrels have been used – for example, 12 months in barriques (a proportion of new barrels) according to some sources.

Storage potential: Recommended drinking age from around 2022–2034 and beyond.

Aroma & Flavor Profile

Color: Dense ruby with violet rim – youthful and deep.

The scent offers ripe dark berries such as blackcurrant and blackberry, as well as classic notes such as cedar, tobacco, pencil lead, light licorice and minerality.

The taste is full-bodied and structured with firm tannin base, clear acidity and good concentration. Notes of dark fruit, a little grilled herbs, ash/minerals and licorice-like nuances emerge. The aftertaste is persistent and with good length.

However, one review notes that the wine in the 2015 vintage is a little more robust and "raw" than some of the competitors and may therefore require some aging to soften further.

Serving & Food Match

Serving temperature: 16–18 °C, preferably after a short decantation to open up the aromas.

Food match: Ideal for hearty dishes such as grilled beef, game, lamb with herbs, mature cheeses or dishes with character – the wine has the structure for heavy food and needs some counterplay.

Ageing: Although drinkable now with decanting, it will develop additional complexity with 5–10 years of aging.

Overall impression

Château Rauzan-Gassies 2015 is a classic Margaux wine with both the elegance of the region and the wine’s foundation in Cabernet Sauvignon. It delivers dark fruit, firm structure, mineral precision and a long finish. It is not a soft and immediately accessible wine – it requires some time or decanting – but in return it rewards with character and terroir-influenced style. If you are looking for a Bordeaux with both finesse and aging potential, this is a really strong choice.
