Anthonij Rupert Optima 2021 is an elegant and classic Bordeaux-inspired red wine from Franschhoek in South Africa – a blend that combines power, finesse and depth. It is produced by Anthonij Rupert Wyne , one of the country's most prestigious wine houses, known for creating wines with great complexity and aging potential.

Grape varieties

Optima 2021 is composed of the traditional Bordeaux grapes:

• Cabernet Sauvignon

• Merlot

• Cabernet Franc

Each grape variety contributes its own character – Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and tannin, Merlot rounds out the wine with soft fruit, and Cabernet Franc adds spice and aroma.

Manufacturing

The grapes are hand-harvested from selected vineyards in Franschhoek and Darling. After gentle fermentation, the wine is aged for 18–24 months in French oak barrels , some of which are new. This gives depth, complexity and silky tannins, while preserving the freshness of the fruit.

Fragrance

The nose is intense and sophisticated , with aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry and plum , elegantly integrated with notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco, vanilla and mocha . After some time in the glass, hints of herbs and dried rosemary also develop.

Taste

The palate is full-bodied, well-balanced and layered , with ripe dark fruits, finely structured tannins and an elegant acidity that provides freshness. The mid-palate offers nuances of chocolate, espresso and spicy oak , and the finish is long, harmonious and persistent .

Food match

An ideal companion for beef, lamb, game, grilled entrecôte or mature cheeses . It also works excellently as an evening wine for quiet enjoyment.

Anthonij Rupert Wyne was founded in honour of the late Anthonij Rupert, and is today run by his brother Johann Rupert. The winery is one of the frontrunners for classic winemaking in South Africa , where tradition meets modern technique. Optima is among the house’s most popular wines, often called their “mini Bordeaux” – a vinous expression of refined South African craftsmanship .
