Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2013 is a remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon, offering unique flavors from a robust wine region. The vines are planted on steep rocky slopes in Stags Leap, where they draw nourishment from the lean, volcanic soil, resulting in small, dark, and intense grapes.
Shafer Vineyards has been dedicated to winemaking since the 1880s, and in the 1970s, John Shafer began planting on the steep slopes. At that time, Napa Valley viticulture was different, and Shafer took the initiative to revive neglected vineyards. The upper vineyard, known as "John's Folly," required the use of dynamite to remove large boulders.
Hillside Select is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon and gains its complexity through a variety of clones and rootstocks. The varying exposure of the vineyards contributes to the depth of the wine. This diversity in clones and vineyard views ensures that Hillside Select can be produced every year, although quantities may vary.
