Petrus 2016 is an excellent red wine from the Pomerol region of Bordeaux, made exclusively from Merlot grapes. This vintage is renowned for its deep complexity, balance and impressive ageing potential.

Tasting notes

Nose : A seductive aroma of cherries, black plums and blueberry compote, with subtle notes of red roses, Ceylon tea, violets, dark chocolate covered cherries, licorice and cinnamon. Additional nuances of iron ore, pencil lead, cigars and crushed stone add to the wine's complex bouquet.

Taste : Full-bodied and deep with dense layers of red and blue fruit. The structure is characterized by firm, fine-grained tannins and a distinctive freshness that balances the wine's rich flavor profile.

Aftertaste : Incredibly long-lasting with a mineral note that adds depth and complexity.

Production and Terroir

The Petrus vineyard covers 11.4 hectares and is located on a plateau in the eastern part of Pomerol. The soil is rich in iron-rich clay, which gives the wine its unique character. The vines are on average over 45 years old and the grapes are harvested by hand over two to three days. The wine is aged for 12 to 16 months in oak barrels, half of which are new, before being bottled.

Price and Availability

Petrus is known for its exclusivity and high price. A 750 ml bottle of the 2016 vintage costs an average of around $4,112. This rarity and quality make it a sought-after wine among collectors and connoisseurs.

Petrus 2016 captures the essence of the Pomerol terroir and is an example of excellent winemaking. Its complexity, balance and aging potential make it a remarkable addition to any wine cellar.

Robert Parker
The 2016 Petrus has a deep purple-black color and opens with seductive notes of kirsch, warm black plums, blueberry compote, red roses, Ceylon tea, violets, dark chocolate-covered cherries, licorice and cinnamon sticks with hints of iron ore, pencil lead, unsmoked cigars and crushed stone. Full-bodied, deep and absolutely illuminating on the palate, the tightly packed, beautifully perfumed layers of red and blue fruit have an electrifying effect, perfectly framed by very firm, very fine-grained tannins and bold freshness that finishes with incredible length and takes you to depths with a provocative ferruginous undercurrent. Breathtaking.

In 2016, Pétrus produced another epically great wine, following on the heels of the perfect 2015, which was a very different expression. “This 2016 is a more classic representation of the vineyard, especially in terms of its structure, acidity and balance,” Olivier Berrouet told me during my visit to taste the wine in October. "It didn't show much in the early days, but now it's all coming together. It's a very classic vintage and a very big vintage. It's never a question of quantity—it's always a question of quality. I prefer to have less power than to risk the balance of the wine. The temptation is always to go big. This can make a darker, richer wine—but you can lose the balance of the wine. You have to constantly study the fundamentals. The numbers for the 2015 Pétrus are the same as the 2016, but the styles are completely different. I love the 2016—it's typically a wine that needs time to show everything it has. It shows you more and more every time."
