NJORD “Sandhøj” 2022
Manufacturer & location
NJORD Vingård is located in the Holbæk area on Zealand and works with the Pinot Noir Précoce grape variety (an early mutation of Pinot Noir). The vineyard “Sandhøj” is a small, selected plot of 0.25 ha with extremely sandy soil – the top layer of soil is only approx. 30 cm thick, and below it are deep sand layers without clay – a terroir that gives low yields and strong character.
Grape variety & technique
100% Pinot Noir Precoce.
Harvested from the Sandhøj vineyard, with sandy subsoil that provides special growing conditions.
The production for the 2022 vintage was included as one of four terroirs (“Terrassen”, “En Variation”, “Sandhøj” and “Issø”).
Appearance, smell and taste
The color: Clear ruby red tone.
The aroma: Elegant with fresh red berries — cherries, raspberries — as well as a subtle mineral or sandy undertone, revealing the unique soil of the field.
Taste: Fruity and fresh, with structured but fine tannins and a clear terroir character. The sandy soil gives a slight “lightness” or airiness to the expression, despite the ripe fruit profile. The aftertaste is persistent with elegance and a hint of minerality.
Serving & food match
Serving temperature: Approximately 15-17 °C to allow the fruit and structure to unfold.
Food match: Suitable for poultry dishes such as chicken or duck with mushrooms, light game, grilled veal, and mature, mild cheeses. The fullness and terroir-influenced character make it a good match for dishes with a little more “body”.
Overall impression
NJORD “Sandhøj” 2022 is an excellent example of how far Danish winemaking has come – a wine with both character and finesse, where the terroir really makes a difference. Sandhøj’s very sandy soil contributes to the wine’s unique profile – a wine for the serious wine lover who wants to experience Danish wine at a high level.
