2018 Kershaw Elgin Pinot Noir

Grape Variety: Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir, utilizing French clones PN777, PN667, PN115, PN114, and PN113.

Region: Sourced from Elgin in the Western Cape of South Africa.

Yield: Produced 6.87 tons from six distinct small parcels.

Background: Founded in 2012 by Richard Kershaw MW, Richard Kershaw Wines specializes in wines that are clonally selected and site-specific, thriving in cool climates. The Elgin Valley, known as South Africa's coolest wine region, provides perfect conditions for varietals such as Chardonnay, Syrah, and Pinot Noir.

Harvest Details: Grapes were handpicked between February 14th and 24th, 2017, with Brix levels ranging from 22.60 to 24.90 at the time of harvest.

Growing Season: The 2018 season featured a cool winter with minimal rainfall, leading to early budbreak and flowering. Strong winds and a cool December resulted in smaller berries with intense flavors. January rains enriched the soil, and the February harvest took place under clear skies with cool nights, producing wines with natural acidity, pure fruit notes, and refined tannins.

Vinification: Grapes were handpicked, sorted, and destemmed, followed by a 3-day maceration and natural fermentation. The process included gentle pigage, 10-16 days on skins, gravity racking to barrels, and basket pressing of the pomace. Malolactic fermentation occurred in barrels, with light sulphuring and an 11-month maturation period. The wine was racked and filtered before bottling.

Barrel Aging: Aged in French oak barrels from Burgundy, with 12% new oak, and the remainder in second and third fill barrels of 228, 300, and 500 liters.

Alcohol Content: 13.50%
