Eben Sadie Treinspoor 2023

Grape: Tinta Barroca
Alcohol content: approximately 13.5%

Eben Sadie is known as one of South Africa’s absolute cult winemakers, and with Treinspoor 2023 he once again demonstrates his unique talent for uniting terroir, tradition and innovation. The name Treinspoor means “railway track” and refers to the old vineyards that lie along a railway line in the Swartland region.

Flavor profile

Treinspoor is created from the Portuguese grape variety Tinta Barroca , which thrives excellently in the dry, warm climate. The wine has a deep ruby red color. On the nose you are met by intense notes of dark cherries, plums, violets and a touch of dried herbs. The taste is concentrated, but at the same time refined and fresh with silky tannins, nice acidity and a mineral nerve, which provides great balance. The aftertaste is long, complex and elegant.

Food recommendations

This wine is perfect with grilled lamb, beef, spicy Mediterranean dishes or mature firm cheeses. It can be enjoyed young for its juicy fruit, but also has the potential to develop nicely in the cellar over the next 8–12 years.

The manufacturer

Eben Sadie and his Sadie Family Wines are considered frontrunners for quality wine in the Swartland. The focus is on old vines, low harvest yields and natural winemaking, resulting in wines with great authenticity and a clear anchoring in the terroir.

Reviews and points

95 points - James Suckling, October 2024

"Intense violet and dried-flower aromas here, combining with blue and black plum fruit, tea leaves, bark and nutmeg. It's medium-bodied, very fresh and alive, with tight and firm yet almost indiscernible tannins that spread across the palate. Well-framed. Tinta barroca from old bush vines planted in Malmesbury in the Swartland, half destemmed and half whole-cluster fermented. Try from 2026."

95 points - Vinous, August 2024

"The 2023 Treinspoor is pure Tinta Barocca planted on sandstone and granite/quartz. Dark berry fruit and hints of Earl Gray unfold on the nose that's maybe just a bit Nebbiolo-like in style and very expressive. Brisk and bright, the palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins. It's a little Barolo-like towards the grippy finish, leaving veins of blue fruit on the aftertaste. Outstanding and characterful."

Written about previous years:

96 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2023

"Stately and refined on the nose, the 2022 Old Vine Series Treinspoor expresses dark red fruit with ripe black cherry and spiced plum essences. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate displays elegance and finesse, offering a balanced frame of fine-grained tannins with seductive mineral tension. For those who have never tried this bottling, many elements will be familiar and pleasurable, offering fantastic action with layers of complexity before ending with a long lingering finish that shines with bold tannins. 7,500 bottles were produced from 50% whole-cluster grapes."
